But now a new research is saying that abusing can increase your physical strength. Yes, this is not a joke but a serious scientific study. Scientists from UK’s Keele University have found in their study that swearing improves a person’s physical performance. In this article we will explain in detail what is the connection between abuse and power.

Now science has also accepted that there is a solid reason behind this. A new study provides evidence that swearing can help bring out the hidden strength within us.

But abusing is an easy way to focus yourself. It makes you feel more confident. Your attention gets distracted less. And you get into ‘go for it’ mode to complete any task. That means you can give up your full force without hesitation.
How did this unique and strange experiment happen? Richard Stephens and his colleagues conducted an experiment to find out. He was from Keele University and University of Alabama. They wanted to see whether abuse not only improves physical performance, but also changes a person’s psychology in that moment.

People doing hard physical work were selected – 88 people were selected for this first experiment. His age was between 18 to 65 years. All these people were physically fit and could do hard work. These participants were called to a university campus. Everyone was asked to choose a pair of words. There was an abusive word in it that you say when you bump your head. And the second was a neutral word such as ‘table’ or ‘chair’.
Chair Push Up- After this he was made to do a special kind of exercise. This is called ‘chair push-up’. In this, one has to lift the entire body weight with one’s hands while sitting on a chair. This sounds easy but it is very difficult to do it for a long time.
Real power revealed by sitting on a chair – During this experiment, the participants had to speak their chosen word repeatedly. Sometimes he had to use abusive words and sometimes neutral words. This was decided randomly. The participants had to remain in this pose for as long as possible. They could do this for a maximum of 60 seconds. During this he also had to look into the eyes of the researcher.
Surprising results- To confirm the results of the first experiment, a second experiment was also conducted. 94 new people were included in this. These were also selected in the same manner. This time also the same measurements and scales were used. But this time scientists also added some new things to it. They wanted to see whether swearing reduces anxiety or negative emotions.
Abuse improves performance – results were similar in both experiments. It became clear that swearing benefits physical performance. People who used abusive words were able to do chair push-ups for longer periods of time.
The feeling of pain and fatigue reduces – another interesting thing has come to light in the study. The level of positive emotion and humor was high in the abuse session. That means people were enjoying that difficult work. This shows that abuse helps put people into action mode.
Power and mind game- When we say a neutral word, it has nothing to do with our emotions. But abusive words are connected to deeper parts of our brain. These create emotional responses. Perhaps this is the reason why it gives an adrenaline-like rush. However, scientists are still doing further research on it.
