Harish Rana passive euthanasia case: The Supreme Court will now talk to the parents who are seeking euthanasia for Ghaziabad youth Harish Rana. After seeing the medical report of AIIMS, the Supreme Court said, now we have to do something, we cannot let him remain alive like this. For this, the court has called the court to meet Harish Rana’s parents Nirmala Rana and Ashok Rana on January 13, where the court will talk to them in the matter of giving passive euthanasia to their son.
The bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and KV Vishwanathan has given this order after looking at the report of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) regarding Harish’s condition. The bench said that now the time has come to take a decision on passive euthanasia in the case of 31-year-old Harish Rana. Harish is bedridden in an unconscious state for the last 13 years. The parents said in their petition that due to lying in bed for so long, wounds had developed on his body.
The Supreme Court bench has ordered that this report of AIIMS be given to Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Aishwarya Bhati and advocate Rashmi Nandkumar, who is appearing on behalf of Harish’s parents. The bench has also said that it will talk to the parents personally once before taking any decision.
Said this to the lawyers
The Supreme Court bench told all the lawyers, ‘We have now reached a situation where we will have to take the final decision. For this, your full help is needed. The report is very sad and this decision is not easy for us too but we cannot keep this boy in this condition forever.
On August 20, 2013, Harish Rana, a resident of Ghaziabad, fell from the fourth floor of his PG (Paying Guest) residence while studying B.Tech at Panjab University. He suffered a deep head injury, even after treatment in several hospitals, his condition did not improve and he went into the vegetative stage. Harish Rana, who has been in this condition for the last 13 years, has now demanded euthanasia from his parents and has appealed to free their son from this condition.
What will happen in passive euthanasia?
In passive euthanasia, the artificial life support system installed on the patient’s body is removed and he is left, after which he dies. However, in this case the Supreme Court had said that a decision will be taken only when the primary and secondary medical reports are the same.
