New Delhi. The cyber cell of Delhi Police has exposed a big international syndicate, which was robbing the pockets of American citizens. Cyber Cell has raided this illegal call center running in a residential society of Gujranwala Town and arrested 7 operatives. This gang, posing as Apple Technical Support, has already extorted crores of rupees through Bitcoin.
Police investigation revealed that this illegal call center was being run from a luxurious flat for the last four months. The criminals had used technology very cleverly. His way of working was so complex that the common man easily got trapped in his trap.
Conspiracy hatched in high-tech manner
The accused used ‘Micro SIP’ software. When an American citizen called Apple’s toll-free number for help, the call was diverted to this center in Delhi. Posing as Apple executives, these fraudsters would take the victims into confidence and get remote access applications installed on their devices. Once they got control of the computer or phone, they would steal their personal data and banking information.
Bitcoin becomes a weapon of robbery
The next stage of the fraud was the most dangerous. Another team of accused used to call the victim pretending to be bank officials. They used to scare them that their account was in danger and the only way to escape was to buy cryptocurrency from Bitcoin kiosks located in the US. Finally, they would obtain the ‘private key’ or QR code of the Bitcoin wallet from the victim and transfer all the money to their wallet.
Educated youth on the path of crime
The most surprising name among the arrested accused is that of Mayank Kumar of Uttam Nagar, who has done MBA in Finance. He was working there as a tele-caller. Other gang members Aman Singh and Janpreet Singh played the role of supervisor and banker, who handled Bitcoin transactions. The remaining accused Mayank, Deepanshu, Karan Kapoor and Aman Prasad used to trap people by speaking in American accent.
Delhi Police recovered 16 smartphones
DCP Aditya Gautam of Cyber Cell of Delhi Police said that in this raid conducted under the leadership of Inspector Subhash Chandra, 7 high-end laptops, 16 smartphones, VoIP devices and a huge amount of banking data of American citizens have been recovered. Police have also recovered several Bitcoin wallet keys and QR codes from the spot, which were used to siphon money.
Delhi Police is now searching for the top bosses of this network. It is also being investigated whether this gang is also connected to cyber criminals of other countries. The Crime Branch says that this action will improve India’s image at the international level, because such call centers bring bad reputation to the country across the world.
