Fatty liver disease is a silent killer. In this, the patient does not see symptoms in the initial stage, due to which this disease reaches a serious and fatal stage. But if this cause is removed in time, then the initial scarring (fibrosis) in the liver can be reversed. Especially in F1 to F3 stage, this disease can be cured by adopting the right lifestyle.
The story of a 32-year-old female corporate executive is an example of this. She had gone to her gynecologist for treatment of PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome). Since he had mild cholesterol and pre-diabetes, the doctor advised him to consult a gastroenterologist. He had no pain or discomfort, so this advice seemed strange to him. But investigation revealed that he had F2 fatty liver.
What is F2 fatty liver?
F2 fatty liver means moderate level of scarring in the liver. This is the stage between fat accumulation and the serious condition cirrhosis. At this stage the structure and function of the liver starts getting affected. Generally, the risk of fatty liver is low in women due to estrogen hormones, but in women with PCOS, this risk increases due to male hormones (androgens) and insulin resistance, even if their weight is normal.
Fatty liver treatment without medicine
Dr Piyush Ranjan of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, told The Indian Express, “Many of my young patients have reversed fatty liver simply by improving diet, exercise and sleep. Losing 3–5 percent of body weight reduces liver fat and losing 5–10 percent also reduces inflammation.”
Why is the disease not caught in the beginning?
The specialty of the liver is that it continues to do its work despite initial damage. For this reason the symptoms of the disease appear late. In the beginning there is neither pain nor any major problem. Mild to moderate fibrosis is not detected even by simple ultrasound or blood test. Many times the true situation can be revealed only through fibroscan.
small changes, big impact
After diagnosis, this woman completely changed her lifestyle. His weight reduced by about 9 kg in three months. Today his liver enzymes are normal and scans are showing improvement. He completely gave up packaged and sweet foods. He completely avoided things like soda, bakery items, breakfast cereals, flavored yogurt and sauces which were once his favourites. Instead, include home-cooked food, whole grains, vegetables, fruits, pulses and fish. Apart from this, he also started drinking black coffee and doing strength training three days a week, so that the muscles become stronger.
Why is fatty liver increasing in India?
According to Dr. Ranjan, belly fat i.e. visceral fat is a major cause of fatty liver in India. This fat reaches the liver directly and increases inflammation and insulin resistance. They also warn against “lean mash,” which can lead to fatty liver even in people of normal weight. Experts say that weight should be reduced gradually, because too rapid weight loss can have adverse effects on the liver.
