The T20 match between India and South Africa got stuck due to pollution and dense fog in Lucknow. Shashi Tharoor also expressed concern on this. Wrote – 411 AQI and smog are dangerous, it would have been better to get it done in Thiruvananthapuram, where AQI is only 68. The country’s capital Delhi has also become a gas chamber and breathing has become difficult. At such a time, China has shared its secret, with the help of which it has cleaned the air of its capital Beijing. There was a time when Beijing was also counted among the most polluted cities in the world, but today blue skies are visible there. Chinese Embassy spokesperson in Delhi Yu Jing has shared Beijing’s success story on social media and presented a step-by-step guide. Told how Beijing defeated pollution.
Those 6 suggestions from China which can be useful for Delhi
Spokesperson Yu Jing has mentioned 6 major steps taken by Beijing to deal with vehicular pollution, which can be a case study for Delhi.
- China 6N Standards: Very strict China 6N standards should be implemented for emissions. It can be even stricter than India’s BS-VI.
- Farewell to old vehicles: Complete ban on emitting and old vehicles and the policy of removing them from the roads i.e. phase out.
- Car rationing: Controlling the number of cars running in a city. For this, strict rules like lottery system or odd-even should be implemented.
- Public Transport: Strengthening the network of metro and buses so much that people leave private vehicles.
- Electric Revolution: Creating a network of huge subsidies, tax breaks and charging infrastructure to increase the number of electric vehicles (EV).
- Support of neighbors: Beijing does not work alone, but in collaboration with its neighboring areas (Tianjin and Hebei) on pollution control model. Delhi will also have to do the same with NCR states.
Locking on 3000 factories became a game changer
The biggest contribution in cleaning Beijing’s air has been ‘Phase 2’ i.e. industrial restructuring. The Chinese Embassy said that this decision was not easy, but its results were shocking. Beijing either closed more than 3,000 heavy industries within the city forever or moved them out of the city. Shougang, one of China’s largest steel companies, was moved out of Beijing. Due to this one decision alone, there was a reduction of about 20% in the number of deadly particles present in the air.
How did Beijing tackle air pollution?
Step 1: Vehicle emissions control
🔹 Adopt ultra-strict regulations like China 6NI (on par with Euro 6)
🔹 Phase-out retired old, high-emission vehicles
🔹Curb car growth via license-plate lotteries and odd-even / weekday driving… pic.twitter.com/E0cFp4wgsV
