Periods every month are a common but painful problem for women. This can cause severe stomach pain, back pain, fatigue, irritability and sometimes even vomiting. Many women consider this pain as a compulsion, whereas Ayurveda tells how to treat it from the root. Ayurveda not only reduces pain but also controls and smoothes periods by correcting imbalances in the body. According to Ayurveda, menstrual pain is mostly caused by the imbalance of Vata dosha. Vata dosha controls the movement and flow of the body. When Vata becomes unbalanced, contraction of the uterine muscles increases, causing severe pain. Eating cold things, irregular daily routine, excessive mental stress, lack of sleep and taking excessive caffeine further aggravates Vata dosha. For this reason, period pain is seen more in today’s lifestyle.
In Ayurveda, eating celery and jaggery is considered very beneficial for menstrual pain. Ajwain balances vata and kapha, while jaggery keeps the body warm and improves blood circulation. Eating half a spoon of celery with jaggery one or two days before periods reduces stomach cramps. This remedy also provides relief from gas and flatulence.
Drinking hot water during periods is an easy and effective way. This reduces the coldness of the body and relaxes the muscles. Lightly massaging the stomach and waist with sesame oil provides great relief from pain. Sesame oil pacifies Vata and increases blood circulation in the uterus. Massaging before sleeping at night is considered even more beneficial.
In Ayurveda, Ashoka bark is considered very beneficial for women. Drinking the decoction of Ashoka bark reduces period pain, excessive bleeding and weakness. Asparagus also plays an important role in balancing hormones. It not only reduces period pain but is also considered helpful in regularizing periods and improving reproductive health. It is good to eat both the things as per the advice of Ayurvedic doctor.
Light yogasanas and pranayam are very helpful for period pain. Asanas like Bhujangasana, Balasana and Supta Baddha Konasana reduce the strain on the stomach. Anulom Vilom and Bhramari Pranayam reduce stress, which reduces the intensity of pain. Regular yoga practice strengthens the body and gradually reduces menstrual problems.
