The story of Lai Yi, a young mother from Malaysia, is in discussion these days. Lai Yi is a single mother. For better income and his son’s future, he decided to go to South Korea with his then three-year-old son for a job. It was very difficult to live life there. The woman had to leave her son at home alone and go to work.
After marriage, every couple wants to have children and take their family forward. But after having children, it becomes very difficult for women to manage life. If a woman is working, then in many circumstances she has to leave her job and if she does not do so and her in-laws do not live together, then she has to hire someone at home to take care of the child. This has become a common practice in India also. But recently the ways of a foreign mother surprised everyone. She goes to work leaving her 3 year old son alone at home. He has not even hired any maid to take care of him. Rather, she monitors the child on CCTV.
According to the report of ‘The Independent Singapore’, the story of Lai Yee, a young mother from Malaysia, is in the news these days. Lai Yi is a single mother. For better income and his son’s future, he decided to go to South Korea with his then three-year-old son for a job. Financial needs and hope for a better life brought them to this decision, but this path was not at all easy. After reaching Korea, Lai Yi found a nanny to take care of her son, who took care of the child during the weekdays. The problem arose when it was discovered that the nanny did not work on weekends, whereas Lai Yi’s job required her to work on Saturdays as well.
Mother used to go to work leaving 3 year old child alone
Not every company in South Korea allows employees to bring their children to the office. Lai Yi also had no such option. No relatives, no reliable support. In such a situation, he had to take a very difficult and emotional decision. “When there is no other option, such decisions have to be taken, no matter how painful they may be,” he told Malaysian newspaper Shin Chew Daily. Lai Yi was forced to go to work, leaving her three-year-old son alone at home for a few days. This decision was devastating for him from within. Lai Yi herself believes that no mother or father would willingly leave such a small child alone from morning to evening, but the circumstances were such that she had to do this.
Mother installed CCTV camera in the house
Then a thought came to Lai Yi’s mind. She installed CCTV cameras in the house, through which she could keep a constant eye on her son even while she was at work. During lunch break, she used to eat food with her son through video call, talk to him and try to make him feel that even though his mother is not around, she is with him. This ‘remote parenting’ was emotionally tiring for them, but it also gave them some solace. Lai Yi tells that her son became her biggest strength in this entire struggle. Even at such a young age, the child rarely cried and had learned to adapt himself to the situation. According to the mother, her son had learned to be self-reliant at the age of three, which was difficult for many people to believe. To make the child feel safe and comfortable, Lai Yi would prepare food for him every day before leaving for work. Circumstances changed with time. After years of hard work, struggle and patience, stability came in the life of mother and son. Today Lai Yi’s son is six years old. Now the situation is better than ever before and Lai Yi’s biggest wish is to make up for the time that she could not give to her son due to compulsion.
