Dehradun: These days, dry weather and cold winter have increased the problems of the people in the capital Dehradun. The biggest impact of continuous drop in temperature and lack of moisture in the air is being seen on the health of small children. The situation is such that the number of child patients in Doon Medical College Hospital, Dehradun has increased rapidly.
A large number of children are reaching the hospital for treatment of cold, cough, fever and especially respiratory problems. According to doctors, this situation may become more serious in the coming days, if the weather continues like this.
Risk of asthma attack is higher in dry weather
This changing pattern of weather has become a matter of concern especially for children suffering from asthma. There has been an increase in the number of children in the Pediatrics Department of Doon Medical College Hospital who have to be admitted due to asthma attacks or serious respiratory problems.
Pediatrician and Head of the Department, Dr. Ashok Kumar says that children are in need of frequent nebulization during the winter season. If someone in the family has previously had the problem of asthma or allergy, then the risk of it increases in children also. In winter, allergy causing particles present in the air become more active, due to which the chances of asthma attack in children increases. In many cases, its symptoms start appearing around the age of two years of the child. Weak immunity also becomes a major reason for this.
Respiratory tubes shrink due to dry air
According to Dr. Ashok Kumar, cold and dry air in winter constricts the respiratory tubes. Due to this, children suffering from asthma start having difficulty in breathing and their condition can worsen. This is the reason why asthma and respiratory related cases are continuously increasing in the pediatric department of the hospital in this season.
Provide medicines and inhalers to children suffering from asthma regularly and stay in touch with the doctor. It is very important to use the inhaler properly. Despite the cold, keep giving lukewarm water to the children, so that the throat and lungs remain moist.
Dust can also cause problems
According to doctors, dust, smoke and pet fur present inside the house can also trigger asthma attacks. Avoid taking children outside in the cold and dry air of early morning and late evening. If it is necessary to go out, cover children’s mouth and nose with a mask or scarf.
If the child is facing a lot of trouble or difficulty in breathing is increasing, then consult a good pediatrician without any delay. With timely caution and proper treatment, children can be kept safe this winter.
