Nainital: Protest against cutting of cedar trees in Uttarakhand has once again intensified. Environmentalists, local villagers and social organizations say that cedar is not just a tree but also the shield of the Himalayas. Actually, these days, due to the work of Char Dham All Weather Road, there were preparations to cut about 6000 trees, after which the local people and environment lovers protested strongly and tied protection threads in the cedar trees. However, after this it was decided to make the road one meter less wide and it is planned to cut 1413 trees. The proposed felling in the name of road widening and development projects in these mountainous areas of the Himalayas has raised concerns.
cedar is the shield of the himalayas
For centuries, cedar has been considered the shield of the Himalayas and a tree that prevents landslides. Besides, it is also called the tree of the gods. The roots of cedar are very deep and strong, which hold the soil of the mountains. This is the reason why cedar is considered to play an important role in preventing landslides. During heavy rains and snowfall, these trees absorb water slowly, which reduces the risk of sudden debris flows. According to experts, cedar forests also help in maintaining the temperature balance of the mountains and preserving water sources.
