Under the new labor code, workers in India can work 12 hours a day four days a week and take three days off. According to the government, you will get double wages for overtime. With this, people’s productivity is expected to increase and there will be work-life balance in life. The World Economic Forum recently said that more than twenty-seven lakh workers in Britain, or 11 percent of the total workforce, are now working four days a day.
In most of the offices in our country, people work for 5 days and get two days weekend. But the recently implemented new labor code has provided great facilities to the workers. Under this, they can work 12 hours a day for four days a week and can take leave for the remaining three days with full salary.
The Labor Ministry has dispelled rumors related to the Labor Code by posting on social media. According to the Ministry, it is seen on social media that many people are posting that now it has been 12 hours of normal work, whereas it is not so. There will be a total of 48 hours per week and double wages will be paid for work beyond the stipulated hours.
Interval is also included in 12 hours of work
The ministry said that 12 hours of work will also include intervals, that is, there will be time for food, tea and rest in between, there will be no need to work hard continuously. If someone works more than the prescribed hours, he will be paid double the overtime rate. This rest during work time is good for the workers because many people want a three-day long leave to spend time with family or to relax.
Rules will be issued soon
Complete details of this scheme will come in the draft rules in the coming few weeks. This long weekend is especially beneficial for young laborers because during these days they can study courses or learn new skills which will help them in their career. Many countries are experimenting with the four-day work week system, such as Belgium where it is 40 hours a week, Netherlands and Denmark are also included in this.
When did productivity increase?
The World Economic Forum recently said that more than twenty-seven lakh workers in Britain, or 11 percent of the total workforce, are now working four days a day. Talking about some trials, in 2019, Microsoft Japan conducted a four-day work pilot in which offices were closed on Fridays and meetings were halved. The result was that productivity increased by 40 percent. 92 percent of the companies involved in the trial in Britain continued the 4-day work plan because both productivity and health of workers improved.
While the pace of the four-day work week is changing, AI is rapidly reshaping productivity. Generative AI increases output and reduces boring work, especially for new employees. Companies like Omega Healthcare are already reporting that it is paying off. This new labor rule in India is giving freedom to the workers to create a balance of work and rest as per their wish, there is no compulsion. Besides, experiences from other countries of the world also show that it can increase happiness, productivity and quality of life. The government believes that this will motivate the workers to work and overall productivity will increase.
