Northeast India is showing that waste is no longer hidden, but work is being done to reuse, recover and save nature. Green Revolution of North Lakhimpur in Assam North Lakhimpur city of Assam has become an excellent example of scientific waste management under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0. Here 79,000 metric tons of old garbage was removed from Chandmari dumpsite. Due to this, 16 bighas of land was vacated and now urban forest and leisure area is being created on 10 bighas.
36-42 tonnes of garbage is generated here every day, which is now disposed of in a modern way. Japisajiya is the first integrated center in Assam, where Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and waste-to-compost plant work together. The MRF has a capacity of 100 tonnes per day and brings the recycled material back into the economy. The compost unit converts 25 tonnes of wet waste into organic fertilizer for farmers every day. Cleaning of old garbage, modern facilities and environmental restoration have made North Lakhimpur a model of development in Assam.
Community Initiative in Arunachal Community turned garbage crisis into success in Roing, Arunachal Pradesh. In 2022, Roing Municipal Council partnered with ‘Green Roing’ self-help group. The 12-member team collects garbage door-to-door. Plastic dumping sites were cordoned off. The women of the group earn by selling recycled materials. The most beautiful example of rowing is the ‘Waste to Wonder’ butterfly park, which is made of 10,000 plastic bottles.
