Patna: Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences i.e. IGIMS of the capital Patna has once again proved its expertise in the medical world. Today i.e. on 15th December, an extremely rare and complex operation was successfully carried out by the Surgical Gastroenterology Department of the institute. Through this operation, a huge tumor weighing about 8 kg was completely safely removed from the patient’s stomach.
Dr. Manish Mandal, Head of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Medical Superintendent, said that a 60-year-old middle-aged patient resident of Begusarai had reached the OPD complaining of flatulence, indigestion and continuous belching. In the initial days, the patient thought that it was gas, but it was not gas but the sound of a terrible disease. When the condition worsened, the patient was first referred to IGIMS by the doctor of Begusarai. After initial investigation, when CT scan was done, a large and complex tumor was confirmed inside the stomach.
The tumor was in a dangerous condition
According to Dr. Manish Mandal, this tumor was in a very dangerous condition, because it was very close to the major arteries and veins of the stomach. It was also adjacent to the small and large intestine. In such a situation, there is a risk of serious blood loss and life during the operation. For this reason this case was kept in the category of high risk surgery.
Keeping in mind the safety of the patient, Dr. Manish Mandal especially coordinated with the Cardiology Department, Pulmonary Medicine Department and Anesthesia Department. This complex operation was carried out after joint preparation and long planning of all departments.
The operation lasted for about three hours
During this difficult operation that lasted for about three hours, the team of doctors, using utmost care and modern techniques, completely removed the tumor from the stomach. The tumor that came out appeared to be of the shape of head, neck and torso, which surprised everyone. Its weight was about 8 kilograms.
The tumor was an extremely rare type.
According to doctors, this tumor is an extremely rare type. Its cases are rarely seen all over the world. Not only diagnosis but also surgical treatment of such tumors is considered a big challenge in the medical field. Having such a successful operation at IGIMS reflects the capability and expertise of the institute. This operation was successfully carried out under the leadership of Dr. Manish Mandal by Dr. Saket Kumar, Dr. Abhimanyu, Dr. Danish, Dr. Sugeet and Dr. Nitin from the anesthesia department. Due to teamwork, experience and technical proficiency, this complex surgery could be completed without any serious complications.
