Thailand Cambodia Ceasefire: After the mediation of US President Donald Trump, Thailand and Cambodia have again agreed on ceasefire. Dozens of people were killed and thousands displaced in the recent border clashes. Expressing concern over the damage to Preah Vihar Temple, India has appealed to both the countries to exercise restraint.
Thailand Cambodia Ceasefire: The border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia finally seems to be coming to an end. US President Donald Trump has claimed that both the countries have once again agreed on ceasefire. In the last few days, there were rocket and artillery attacks between the two countries, in which dozens of people lost their lives and thousands of civilians had to leave their homes. The situation had become such that there was a possibility of a major war breaking out. Also on Friday, Cambodian troops fired BM-21 multiple rocket launchers from civilian areas in Preah Vihear province towards Thailand’s Hill 677. This time the fighting started after the death and injuries of civilians in a bomb blast. Trump called it an accident.
When will there be peace between Thailand and Cambodia?
Donald Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social on Friday that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to stop all firing from Friday evening and they are returning to the same peace agreement which was earlier brokered by Trump and Malaysia. Trump said he spoke directly with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on this matter. Trump described the border skirmishes as unfortunate and said he was proud that his efforts had averted a potentially major war.
He also thanked Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who had earlier mediated between the two countries. Earlier also in July, there was a ceasefire after the conflict, which was formalized in Malaysia in October.
Why is India in tension due to Thailand-Cambodia war?
India has expressed concern over reports of damage to the conservation center of Preah Vihar, a world heritage site, during the ongoing border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. The Foreign Ministry said on Friday that any damage to the cultural heritage of the region is ‘unfortunate’ and ‘a matter of concern’. India has appealed to both the countries to exercise restraint, take steps for ceasefire and keep the site safe. A ministry spokesperson said, ‘We have seen reports of damage to conservation facilities in Preah Vihar. Any such loss is sad and a cause for concern. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the common cultural heritage of humanity and India is closely associated with its conservation.
The spokesperson said, ‘We hope that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure complete security of the temple premises and related conservation centres. We appeal to both sides to exercise restraint, stop escalating tensions and return to the path of dialogue and peace.
