Muzaffarpur: The negligence with unclaimed dead bodies in Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), the largest hospital of North Bihar, has raised serious questions on the administrative system. The matter has now reached the National Human Rights Commission as well as the Bihar State Human Rights Commission regarding the bodies not being cremated within the stipulated time and in many cases the bodies lying there for 20 to 30 days.
Advocate S.K., an expert in human rights issues of the district. Jha has filed separate petitions before both the commissions, terming the issue as a serious human rights violation. He said that unclaimed dead bodies in SKMCH are not given human respect and are left lying like this for many days. If the dead bodies are not picked up for a long time, they start rotting and foul smell starts spreading in the hospital premises, which causes a lot of trouble to the patients and common people.
The most serious thing is that the deep freezer of the hospital, in which the dead bodies are kept safe, has been bad for years. Advocate Jha said that due to the freezer being out of order, there is no scientific system left to preserve the dead bodies, due to which the bodies start deteriorating rapidly. He says that this situation is not only inhumane, but also shows serious negligence of the hospital administration.

Along with this, he has demanded better preservation arrangements for unclaimed dead bodies in the hospital, immediate repair of deep freezer or providing a new machine, and ensuring timely last rites.
Respectful treatment of the dead body of any human being, even if it is unclaimed, is the first responsibility of humanity. If the hospital fails to fulfill even this basic responsibility then it is a direct violation of human rights, which can no longer be ignored.
