Hazaribagh farmer Mukesh Mehta took up commercial cultivation of cabbage by taking 4 acres of land on lease and earned up to ₹ 4 lakh by spending ₹ 2 lakh. He saved the crop from heavy rains by using organic farming and mulching method. His cabbage is in demand in local markets as well as in Bihar and West Bengal. Where they are selling directly at the rate of ₹ 28-30 per kg.
Hazaribagh: Farmer Mukesh Mehta of Sadar block of Hazaribagh district has proved by cultivating vegetables that farming done by planning at the right time can become a big source of profit for the farmers. Mukesh, who has been involved in farming for years, not only achieved better production by planting cabbage crop this time but also earned huge profits in the market. His success has become a subject of inspiration for local farmers.
Mukesh Mehta took about 4 acres of land on lease at the rate of Rs 6000 per acre and cultivated cabbage in it. From field preparation to plantation, irrigation, fertilizer and labor, the total expenditure incurred is around Rs 2 lakh. Although the weather was not completely favorable this time, their hard work paid off. Mukesh has sold about Rs 4 lakh worth of cabbage so far and the demand for his crop remains constant.

Their specialty is that they do farming not just in traditional ways but as a systematic business. While talking to Local 18 Jharkhand, he told that he has been involved in farming for the last 15 years, but for the last two years he has started cultivating cabbage commercially. This time the heavy rains definitely affected the production, but the way he did farming reduced the losses to a great extent.
Mukesh Mehta further said that even during heavy rains, organic farming and mulching method saved his crops. Along with this, he had used seeds of Syngenta variety of cauliflower in his farm, which have proved to be quite durable even in adverse weather like rain. Although the effect of rain was visible on some plants and the production also decreased slightly, yet overall their crop remained safe.
Demand till Bihar and West Bengal
The most important thing is that the cabbage crop grown by him is in demand in the local markets of Hazaribagh as well as Bihar and West Bengal. Traders from far away places come to his farm and buy cauliflower. This gives them the benefit of direct sales from the farm and also reduces their dependence on middlemen. He told that he sold cabbage in the market at the rate of about Rs 28 to 30 per kg, due to which he earned good income.
Farmer Mukesh Mehta further said that there is definitely a risk in the agriculture sector, but with modern technology, scientific methods and timely care, the crop can be kept safe. Even now the cabbage crop is visible in his field and traders are arriving every day to purchase it. There is good demand for cauliflower in the winter season, which directly benefits farmers like Mukesh.
