Kharmas is the time when the Sun moves slowly from one zodiac sign to another. During this period, auspicious works are stopped according to religious beliefs. People avoid doing big things like marriage, house warming and adopt simple daily routine.

According to Mahant Swami Kameshwaranand Vedantacharya, Kharmas will last from 16 December 2025 to 14 January 2026. He says that the power of the Sun is weak during this period, that is why this time is not considered right for auspicious works.

There is a religious belief that auspicious energy is less in this month. It is believed that due to weakening of the Sun the balance of the planets is also affected. For this reason, people avoid marriage, naming ceremony or starting any new auspicious work, so that obstacles do not arise.

Marriage is considered a very sacred and auspicious affair. For this reason, there is a tradition of doing it in a good Graha Yoga. Planetary positions in Kharmas are not considered favourable, hence families avoid taking big responsibilities like marriage at this time.

Even if there is no marriage in Kharmas, there is no restriction on shopping. People can easily buy clothes, goods and gifts during this period. It is important to keep in mind that the purchased items should not be used until the auspicious date arrives.

Pundits believe that Mangalsutra, wedding ring and bridal trousseau should not be taken in Kharmas. Because it is considered auspicious to take the main items of the wedding only at the sacred time. There is no objection in purchasing all the other necessary things.

It is absolutely fine to do wedding shopping in Kharmas; there is no inauspiciousness in it. Just remember one rule: do not use the purchased things till the auspicious time. It is considered better to use them only when the right time comes.
