India-US Trade Deal- American delegation has come to India to negotiate trade deal. Meanwhile, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has said important things regarding the trade agreement.
New Delhi. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has said that India has given the best offer ever to the American side. Greer told a Senate subcommittee meeting in Washington DC that the US trade team is currently present in India and is discussing sensitive barriers related to the agricultural sector. It is noteworthy that a high level delegation of the US Trade Representative Office is coming to India under the leadership of US Deputy Trade Representative Ambassador Rick Switzer. From the Indian side, this conversation is being led by Joint Secretary Darpan Jain.
Greer also said India still has “objections” to some crops, but described New Delhi’s latest proposals as unusually open. Praising India, he said that India’s stance during the talks has been “very forward” and New Delhi has made “the best offer we have ever made as a country”. Greer also indicated that India is now emerging as a “viable alternative market” for American agricultural products at a time when American producers face fluctuating demand from China and increasing inventories.
Advice to reduce dependence on China
Senate committee chairman and Kansas MP Jerry Moran raised questions about the need to reduce dependence on China and explore new international markets, to which Greer said that the current talks with India have gone further than those of previous governments. Greer said that this discussion with India is part of America’s broader trade policy, which aims to reduce the trade deficit and make reciprocal agreements around the world. He also mentioned the progress made in South-East Asia and Europe and said that this has strengthened America’s negotiating position with major partners like India.
The visit of the American delegation is very important
This development has come to light at a time when talks are going on in New Delhi regarding the proposed bilateral trade agreement. This visit of the American delegation is considered important, because both the countries are working towards finalizing the first phase of the agreement. Along with this, two parallel negotiations are going on between India and the US, one focused on a tariff-related framework agreement and the other on a comprehensive trade agreement.
