Patna: Never seen such a doctor till date… This is what the megastar of the century Amitabh Bachchan has to say. In fact, Dr. Raman Kishore of Patna, popularly known as the ‘village doctor’, was recently invited to the popular TV show Kaun Banega Crorepati. When the story of his life and service was shared on this popular platform, even Amitabh Bachchan was stunned.
Megastar Amitabh Bachchan said that he has never seen a doctor who, despite having the ability to earn lakhs of rupees, dedicates 90 percent of his salary to social service. That too at such a young age. This selfless story of the Bihari doctor made everyone present on the set of the show emotional. Today, this inspiring story of this ‘village doctor’ is resonating not only in Bihar, but in the entire country and the world.
The only doctor in the village, how did he become a village doctor?
The story of Dr. Raman Kishore begins from the soil of Bahuarwa village of Darbhanga district. Born in an ordinary farmer family, the financial condition of Raman’s family was not such that anyone could even dream of seeing him become a doctor. Even after completing 10th class from the local government school, Raman’s determination remained firm. He had decided that he wanted to become a doctor in life. Despite the village environment, limited resources and all the difficulties, he did not give up. He continued moving forward on the path of struggle.
His hard work bore fruit and in 2012 he got admission in Magadh Medical College, Gaya. With this he created a new history. He became the first doctor of his village Bahuarwa.
This painful incident changed life
There came a painful turn in Raman’s life, which changed his direction. He was completely dedicated to serving others. He lost his mother in the first year of MBBS. The disease was detected late and due to lack of proper treatment on time, his mother could not survive.
While talking to Local 18, Raman says emotionally,
“If the disease had been caught early, my mother would have been alive today. That very day I decided that I would never let anyone else’s mother die because of late treatment.” This incident became the turning point of his life and he devoted himself completely to serving the people of the village.
Free treatment by going from village to village
To turn his resolution into reality, Raman Kishore started organizing free medical camps from village to village from 2020. Be it holidays, Saturday-Sunday or festivals, he spends his time serving people. Many times he himself visits the patients’ homes and examines them and also provides them medicines without any charges. Today, the result of his spirit of service is that till now he has treated more than 40,000 rural patients free of cost.
80 percent of salary in service
Today Raman Kishore is working as a Senior Resident Doctor in ESIC Bihta after completing MD from AIIMS Patna. But for them the salary of a government job is just enough to meet their basic needs. Raman spends 70 to 80 percent of his salary on the treatment of village patients, medicines and medical camps. The most important thing is that they do not accept any donation or external help for this service. He says, “I have taken a vow that I will do this work only with my earnings. Every month, after taking out the minimum expenses, I invest the rest of the money in rural camps.” This selfless spirit of his makes him the ‘village doctor’.
Permanent camp runs in Patna also
Dr. Raman has a permanent camp at Mahavir Mandir in Gora Bazar, located near Danapur Cantt, Patna, where patients are examined and followed up every Sunday evening. At the same time, he travels to different villages throughout the day and organizes free camps. The patients coming to the camp consider Dr. Raman as their family. Everyone is very satisfied with his treatment. Raman Kishore considers this service as a true tribute to his mother.
