In comparison to General class, maximum number of passengers travel without tickets in AC class. This figure may surprise you, but the figures of Central Railway (Mumbai Division) are saying the same. Those traveling in this class are also happily paying the fine.
A campaign was launched by Central Railway against those traveling with unauthorized tickets and without tickets. The Mumbai division team caught 9.63 lakh passengers without tickets, invalid tickets, unbooked luggage in mail, express and suburban trains and collected a total fine of Rs 40.59 crore.
According to Dr. Swapnil Neela, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, Mumbai Division is continuously running special ticket checking campaigns on mail, express trains and suburban AC and non-AC local trains and stations. These special campaigns are also being run to stop unauthorized travelers.

During the financial year 2025-26 (April to October 2025), ticket checking teams of Mumbai division registered a total of 9.63 lakh cases of irregular journeys in mail, express and suburban trains (including AC local) and collected a fine of Rs 40.59 crore.
How many in AC compared to General?
In this campaign, more passengers have been caught without tickets in AC local than in general. According to the data, 71,045 cases were detected in AC local, from which a fine of Rs 2.28 crore was collected. At the same time, 6,98,248 cases were detected from the second category and a fine of Rs 33.69 crore was collected. Apart from this, 91,837 cases were detected in the first category and a fine of Rs 2.93 crore was collected from them. Apart from this, 13,301 cases of fare difference were detected in Mail-Express trains, from which a fine of Rs 0.71 crore was collected. At the same time, a fine of Rs 0.98 crore was collected from 88,713 cases of unbooked luggage.

Similarly, during October-2025, 1.34 lakh cases of irregular travel were detected and a fine of Rs 6.16 crore was collected. This includes a fine of Rs 29.28 lakh from 8958 cases from AC local, a fine of Rs 34.07 lakh from 10686 cases from first class coach, a fine of Rs 5.21 crore from 100535 cases from second class coach, a fine of Rs 1.92 lakh from 3154 cases from fare difference in mail and express trains, a fine of Rs 1.25 lakh from 11149 cases of unbooked luggage.
