Journey to become CEO of the Year 2025
Neil Mohan was born in an ordinary family in Michigan city of America. Neil’s father went to America in the 1960s to pursue a PhD in civil engineering. Neil’s father was a person who accepted changes and had the ability to take risks. The same quality is also seen in Neel Mohan. At the age of 6, he saw a movie called Star Wars. The impact of which was so deep on Neil that he started loving technology and media.
When Neel turned 12, his family shifted to Lucknow city of Uttar Pradesh. For Neil, living in India was like a cultural shock. The sorrow of losing his friends, he had to learn a new language (Hindi) and a new culture. Neel says that Sanskrit was such a difficult and rule-filled language that he felt it was like learning computer programming.
After this he returned to America for college studies and completed his graduation from Stanford University. Later, he also obtained a business school degree. After completing his studies, he worked for some time in a consulting firm.
The real change in Neil’s life came when he joined a small startup NetGravity. This was a company that was working on finding new ways to earn money through advertising on the Internet. His real digital journey started from this place, where he understood the entire system of the online world closely.
How did Neil Mohan reach Google?
In the early days of the Internet, due to lack of much knowledge about earning money from the Internet, NetGravity was soon bought by a big ad tech company DoubleClick. Neil Mohan started working on making ad products in the new company. In 2007, Google purchased DoubleClick for $3.1 billion. In this way Neil reached Google company.
Beginning of journey with YouTube
While working at Google, Neil met Susan Wojcicki. Who was heading Google Ads. It was Susan who had put more emphasis on the deal between Google and DoubleClick. Both of them became friends while working at Google.
Neil also considers him as his mentor. When Susan got the opportunity to head YouTube, she also included Neil in her team. Neil was made the Chief Product Officer of YouTube. This is how his YouTube journey started.
