Grow Garam Masala At Home: You can grow many ingredients of garam masala that add life to vegetables, like black pepper, cardamom, bay leaves, at home. Know what things need to be kept in mind for which spice and how much sunlight it needs to be exposed to, as well as when which spice will be ready.
The smell of spices makes every kitchen special in the winter season. Hot spices like cinnamon, bay leaf, cardamom and black pepper not only enhance the taste but are also very beneficial for health. The good thing is that you can grow these spices in pots at your home. With less space, less care and a little patience, you can prepare your own mini spice garden.
Cinnamon plant is a small tree, but it can be easily grown in a pot. A 14–16 inch pot and light sandy soil is suitable for this. Its saplings are usually available in nurseries. The plant needs light morning sunlight and shade throughout the day. Do not overwater at all – light watering 2–3 times a week is enough. In 2-3 years it gradually starts becoming a strong tree and its bark later becomes cinnamon.
Bay leaf plant is the easiest in terms of care. Mix normal garden soil, compost and some sand in a 12–15 inch pot and plant the plant. It likes plenty of sunlight, so keep it in the balcony or open space. This plant grows rapidly and fresh leaves start appearing in a few months. Only when the leaves turn from light green to dark green, pluck them, dry them in the shade and use them as a spice.

Cardamom grows well in shady and moist places. A deep pot of 14–18 inches is best for this plant. Mix cow dung, coconut husk and light soil in the soil so that moisture remains for a long time. Water lightly daily, but do not over water it. Cardamom likes hot and humid weather. After 1–1.5 years, flowers and small cardamom pods start appearing in the plant.
Black pepper is a vine, which needs support. A 10–12 inch pot and well drained soil is necessary. Support the vine with wood or pipe. Light sunlight and light water are best for this. In hot climates it grows quickly and small chilli spikes start appearing in 8–10 months.
