Sugarcane Cultivation Tips: Sugarcane is such a crop that after sowing once, it can be harvested up to 3 times. In such a situation, as soon as the fields appear empty after sugarcane harvesting, farmers often start filling the gap in a hurry, but this haste becomes a big mistake. If gap filling is not done properly after harvesting, the sugarcane yield may reduce by 20–30% in the next year.
Shahjahanpur : Sugarcane is a crop that gives production once in a year, but with good care, farmers can get continuous yield from the same sugarcane for 2–3 years. These days, sugarcane harvesting is in full swing in Uttar Pradesh. Experts say that paddy management done immediately after harvesting decides the yield of the entire next season. Therefore, farmers need to take special precautions at this time, so that costs can be reduced and production can be increased.
Dr. Shri Prakash Yadav, scientist of Uttar Pradesh Sugarcane Research Institute, said that after cutting sugarcane from the field, in many places the old plants get naturally damaged or die. After removal of such plants, empty spaces are formed between the rows, due to which the production in the next crop reduces. Farmers should immediately dispose of field leaves as soon as harvesting is over and start filling the empty spaces at the same time.
How to do gap filling in sugarcane fields?
Dr. Yadav said that if the distance between one stump and another exceeds one foot, it can reduce the yield of the next crop by 20 to 30 percent. Therefore, it is very important to do gap filling immediately after harvesting. Often farmers mistakenly plant pieces of sugarcane with two or three eyes directly in the field, but this method is not considered very effective. For gap filling, plants prepared by single bud method, 20–25 days old nurseries or plants grown in polybags should be used. The roots of these plants are stronger than before, due to which they become active in the soil and grow rapidly and help in giving full capacity production in the next crop.
Do this work with sugarcane leaves
At the same time, after harvesting of sugarcane, there is a deficiency of nutrients in the soil, hence farmers should supply nitrogen, phosphorus and potash in balanced quantity. This speeds up the growth of the paddy and in the next season both the thickness and length of the sugarcane are at a good level. After harvesting of sugarcane, a large amount of dry leaves fall in the field. Instead of burning them, they should be rotted and mixed in the field, which increases organic matter in the soil and conserves moisture.
