Patna’s famous lawyer late Khuda Baksh Khan had established this historical library in the year 1891. From that period till today it has remained an important center of knowledge, history and culture. The library is also recognized at the international level and is a priceless heritage for researchers.
The oldest manuscript in the Khudbakhsh Library, written on deer skin, dates back to the 9th century. Verses of Quran are written in it. The oldest painting present here is of Arab painting. It is a thousand years old. There are four such original manuscripts which have been given the status of national heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Not only manuscripts, Khuda Baksh Library is also known for its museum and unique ancient collection. Its importance can be gauged from the fact that it is considered the second largest library in the world after the Library of Türkiye. More than 2.9 lakh books along with 21 thousand original manuscripts are kept here.
Fine examples of Indian, Mughal, Rajput, Tanjore, Persian, Arab and Turkish painting are also preserved here. More than 14 thousand letters written by eminent personalities, well-known writers, poets and intellectuals of the country have also been preserved here.
Many ancient and unique things are kept in Khuda Baksh Library. A unique cup and plate is kept here, which automatically breaks as soon as it comes in contact with any poisonous substance. People come from all over the country to see it. Because of this cup-plate, the library museum also attracts special attention.
After establishing the library on 29 October 1891, he also kept the collection of his ancestors safe here. Even today many such items have been preserved in the museum room.
