Kumarganj Agricultural University of Ayodhya has achieved a major success in the field of vegetable science. He has developed a variety of potato which is more resistant to late blight disease. This will result in less use of pesticides.
Dr. CN Ram, Head of the Department of Vegetable Science, Kumarganj Agricultural University, Ayodhya, has developed a new variety of potato in collaboration with Dr. SK, Principal Scientist of Central Potato Research Resource (Shimla). Its name is Kufri Jamunia Potato.
This particular variety looks exactly like a blackberry due to its deep purple color. Due to its color, this variety is not only attractive to look at but is also very rich in nutrition. According to scientists, the amount of antioxidants found in Kufri Jamunia potatoes is many times more than that of normal potatoes. Vitamins, iron, potassium and fiber are also present in large quantities in it.
This variety of potato can be prepared in only 90 to 100 days. Last year, in the trials conducted in the potato field of the university, production of 30–35 tonnes per hectare was recorded. This year also it has been sown on a large scale in the university.

According to Dr. CN Ram, this variety is more resistant to late blight. This specialty is very beneficial for the farmers of Purvanchal because blight disease often causes huge damage to the potato crop in the season of Purvanchal. Due to strong immunity, farmers will have to use less chemical medicines, which will reduce costs and increase profits.
Many agricultural experts believe that Kufri Jamunia potato can prove to be a boon for the farmers of Purvanchal in the coming times. Due to high production, disease resistance and better nutrients, its demand can increase rapidly.
