Greater Noida. Plastic pollution is a big challenge for the world today, but the women of Gaur Sanidhya Society of Greater Noida have set a unique example by turning this challenge into an opportunity. The women of the society had started a small initiative three years ago, the aim of which was to separate the plastic waste generated from homes and give it for recycling. Today this initiative has turned into a big environmental campaign. Thanks to this campaign, benches, chairs, tables, vases and swings made of plastic waste are enhancing the beauty of the society.
This campaign was started by 15 conscious women together. These include women like Anjali Gupta, Rajshree Gupta, Suman Bhardwaj, Geeta Gupta, Manju and Archana, who took the responsibility of different towers and took the message to every home.
how effective
In the initial days, it was not easy to motivate people to keep plastic separated, but the continuous efforts of women gradually made all the residents a part of this campaign. Today more than 300 people of the society are actively involved in this campaign. Every week, residents separate plastic waste from their homes and deposit it at a designated site. After this the recycling company picks up that plastic and recycles it. Every week about 100 kg plastic waste is collected in the society and so far 11000 kg i.e. more than 11 tonnes of plastic has been recycled. This figure in itself tells how effective this campaign has proved to be.
mission launch
The plastic benches, chairs and swings installed in the society are the center of attraction for everyone today. Children also understand the importance of environmental protection while enjoying these swings. To further strengthen the campaign, the society also launched ‘Mi-10 Mission’, under which every member was given a target of donating at least 10 kg of plastic for recycling. A large number of people have accomplished this goal.
