Mughal monuments in Agra: Agra in Uttar Pradesh was the main capital of the Mughal rule, from where the Mughal emperors ruled through the Agra Fort. There is a long series of Mughal period structures in this city, of which ’64 Khamba’ is especially famous. This beautiful red stone building, located opposite Ashopah Hospital and ISBT on the Agra-Mathura road, is known as the tomb of Salabat Khan and his father Sadiq Khan, who are believed to be buried together. Salabat Khan held the post of Mir Bakshi i.e. royal treasurer in the court of Emperor Shahjahan and he received a mansab of four thousand rupees. According to history, this building was constructed between 1644 and 1650. It is said that Amar Singh Rathore had killed Salabat Khan in the court, after which this tomb was built. Today it contains no actual graves, only empty space is visible. The small towers at the four corners and the amazing structure without a dome make this mausoleum unique, while the basement chambers are filled with debris and closed. Historian Raj Kishore Sharma says that despite the name ’64 Khamba’, it does not have actual 64 pillars, yet it got fame by this name.
