Tomato Cultivation Tips: Tomato cultivation is most profitable in winter and December is the best time. It can be grown in the field, pot or kitchen garden. By sowing the seeds in a shallow tray, prepare plants with 3-4 leaves in 12–15 days and transplant them into a bigger pot. Prepare the soil by mixing 50% loam, 30% cow dung manure and 20% sand/coco peat and keep a distance of 10–12 inches between the plants. Provide light sunlight in the morning and shade in the afternoon, irrigate as per need and give vermi compost once a week. Spray neem oil if insects are seen. Fruits are ready 55–70 days after flowering and harvesting can be started. Narendra Pratap Singh, senior horticulture inspector of Rae Bareli district, says that if proper care is taken, a pot planted in December gives tomatoes continuously for 2-3 months. Home grown tomatoes are not only fresh and nutritious but are also chemical free, which also provides health benefits.
