McDonald’s India’s multi-millet burger bun is being considered a big step towards healthy fast food. Five indigenous grains like millet, ragi, jowar, kodo and proso have been included in it, giving customers more nutritious options.
Millets are emerging as a big trend in India today. These grains are no longer limited to rural kitchens only, but have made their place in urban diets, packaged foods and even global fast-food chains. The biggest example of this change is McDonald’s India’s Multi-Millette Burger Bun, which was launched last year. This innovation proved that Indian millets are now becoming a part of mainstream fast food culture. The special thing about the Multi-Millet Bun is that customers can customize any burger with a healthy bun made from five nutritious Indian millets – millet, ragi, jowar, kodo and proso. That means the taste is the same, but the nutrition is many times more.
This innovation is based on Indian thinking, where the trend of including healthy and local ingredients in modern food is continuously increasing. Scientists from CFTRI Mysuru together developed this multi-millet bun with indigenous technology. Dr Singh said that such products support farmers, promote local grains and give international recognition to Indian food technology. This move by McDonald’s India shows that Indian innovation is now influencing the menus of global brands as well. This has not only increased the healthy options but has also given a new identity to millets.
