Daku Sultana Story: Nowadays, most of the people know Pilibhit for its forests and tigers. Today people move here for the clean climate. But at one time people used to choose Terai forests as a place of refuge and escape from the police and paramilitary. The notorious dacoit Sultana also used to take shelter in the forests of Terai under the pressure of the police force.
Sultana Daku was arrested near Najibabad in December 1923. A rare photo taken during his arrest is still popular, in which Sultana looks like a normal person in height and physique. Sultana Daku was tried in Nainital court and was sentenced to death. Hunter and writer Jim Corbett has mentioned the Sultana dacoit in his book ‘My India’ and named him ‘Indian Robinhood’.
Many books and films were made on Sultana Daku at different times. By the way, there is a different story about Sultana dacoit. But very little accurate information related to it is available. But at the age of 30, Sultana had become synonymous with dacoit terror. In view of the continuous incidents, the British government hanged him at the age of 30.
In view of the ever-increasing terror, the pressure on the British police to arrest Sultana also increased. Due to continuous raids in the forests of Kaladhungi in Nainital, Sultana reached Pilibhit situated on the eastern border of the dacoit Terai. During about two years, Sultana had committed major robberies while taking shelter in the forests of Pilibhit. According to local people, the tunnel in the forest of Terai where Sultana used to take shelter is still present in Pilibhit Tiger Reserve.
