Planted more than 1.5 lakh trees using biochar model: This work started in 2017. Here the land was treated with a method called biochar. To make biochar, leftover farm material like straw, stalks are heated in a closed drum or pit without air. This produces a black substance, which looks like coal. Mixing it in the soil improves the health of the soil.
Every year about 70 crore tonnes of agricultural waste is generated in India. People burn one-fourth of it, which causes pollution. If this waste is converted into biochar, it is very beneficial for the soil. It retains moisture in the soil, saves water, brings life back to the soil and helps plants grow faster. It is also considered a great way to store carbon.

Attention was also given to saving water: Along with this, special attention was also given to saving water in Kanha Vanam, there was a place to collect rain water every 50 feet on the roadside. Water absorption pits every 100 feet. More than 800 such deep pits, which are filled with soil, gravel and biochar. 9 big artificial lakes, which can store up to 50 crore liters of water. The result of these efforts was that the level of underground water here has increased from 1000 feet below to 100 feet in 6 years.
Ten years ago, hardly any birds or trees were visible here. Today, there are more than 120 varieties of birds, lakhs of trees and plants and a balanced seasonal environment has developed here. All this has happened without any chemical fertilizers or medicines, just by improving the soil and water.
This model is spreading across India: Now Heartfulness is adopting the same approach in other parts of the country as well. Many new projects are going on in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. 350 hectares of barren land of Aravalli was made green in just 18 months. A 5-year project is going on on 2000 acres of land in Shivgarh, Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh.
It is clear from this that this model of Kanha can work in other dry areas also. Amidst environmental concerns, saving nature through such technology and hard work is a good news for India and the world.
