New Delhi. FedEx has started its largest and hi-tech hub in South India at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. This is a 60,000 square feet automated center, which can process about 4,000 packages every hour. According to the company’s Vice President Operations Suvendu Chaudhary, Bengaluru was chosen because it offers fast and easy connectivity to four major states of South India. This is FedEx’s second major facility at the airport. The first 40,000 square feet dedicated gateway was launched in 2021.
Shipment movement in just 5-10 minutes, fully automated system
The new hub is just 3 km away from the main cargo zone of the airport, allowing packages to be moved in just 5-10 minutes. There are three high-speed conveyors at the center, which do the entire work of weighing, scanning and routing without any manual intervention. Due to automation, the need for floor staff has been significantly reduced and now only a few staff handle the monitoring of the entire facility. The company claims that every package is forwarded in maximum 90 minutes.
Increased accuracy with AI tracking and 24×7 operation
The hub is equipped with 24×7 operation and an AI-powered tracking system that provides predictive insights and continuously monitors temperature-sensitive goods – such as medicines and high-value electronics. This greatly reduces the possibility of delays and virtually eliminates wrong delivery or package misrouting. FedEx says that due to this entire technology, there has been a big improvement in both their delivery accuracy and speed.
Plans for more big hubs in South, West and North India
The company has indicated that it will invest more as cargo volumes increase in India. FedEx is in talks with several airports and plans to set up similar large facilities in other cities in South India as well as in the western and northern regions. Keeping in view the export growth and boom in digital commerce, the company is preparing to increase its Indian network capacity manifold in the coming years.
