Nowadays many parents are working and sometimes due to circumstances they have to leave the child alone at home. This situation may be new and a little scary for the child. In such a situation, it is very important to explain some important things to the child to maintain safety and mental peace.
1. Think before opening the door
Strictly explain to the child not to open the door for any stranger. If a delivery or neighbor comes, talk while keeping the door closed and say that the parents are not home.
2. Memorize emergency numbers
Remind the child to call 100 (police), 101 (fire brigade), 108 (ambulance) and your mobile numbers. Also, keep this number written in a diary at home so that the child can ask for help immediately if needed.
3. Stay away from gas and electricity
Explain to the child that do not use the gas stove, oven or any electric appliance alone. If any problem is noticed, call you immediately.
4. Do not go out of the house
Teach the child the rule that he should not leave the house until you return. Whether a friend calls or you feel like playing, safety comes first.
5. Proper use of phone and internet
If the child uses mobile or internet, tell him not to chat with strangers and not share any personal information.
6. Food preparation
Tell the child in advance which food is kept in the fridge and what he can eat. Keep easy and safe options like fruits, biscuits or pre-made food.
7. Keep calm and call you
Assure the child that if any problem arises, he should not panic and call you immediately. Also let him know that you are always available to help him.
Leaving a child alone can be a compulsion, but with proper guidance and safety rules, this situation can be made safe and easy. It is important to make the child self-reliant, but with security.
