New Delhi. There are large-scale delays and cancellations of Indigo flights at major airports across the country. Due to this, thousands of passengers have been affected and a situation of chaos has arisen at the airports. This is being called Indigo Crisis. The crisis deepened after the full implementation of the new rules in November 2025, but reached its peak in early December 2025. More than 550 flights have been canceled or significantly delayed in the last 24 hours.
What are the reasons behind India crisis?
- Severe shortage of crew (pilots): New rules for Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) implemented by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have been fixed. Under these rules, the weekly rest period for pilots has been increased from 36 hours to 48 hours.
- Changes in landing limits: The limit for night landing has also been reduced from 6 to 2. Making flight rosters (duty charts) has now become very difficult for airlines, as they have to ensure that no pilot’s night landing limit of 2 is exceeded.
- Disruption in technology: There were technical glitches in the check-in and boarding process at some major airports, causing further delays in flights.
- Overcrowding and bad weather: Fog during the winter season and excessive congestion at airports worsened the situation.
