China’s official newspaper Global Times has also given its opinion regarding this and said that this friendship is going to send a message to the West.
What China Says On Putin India Visit: At present the world is clearly divided into two axes. On one side is Russian President Vladimir Putin and on the other side is American President Donald Trump. While there is a group of Western countries against Russia under the pressure of America’s tariff policy, China and India are mainly among the countries supporting Russia. Russia is getting support from Asia and western countries are not able to digest this. Meanwhile, the Russian President’s visit to India becomes even more important.
Russian President Putin reached India on Thursday on a two-day visit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted a private dinner in his honour. Putin has come to India after 5 years, he last visited India on 6 December 2021. This time the visit is taking place on the occasion of completion of 25 years of India-Russia strategic partnership. The whole world is keeping an eye on this. Recently both the leaders met during the Shanghai Cooperation Summit of China. When they met again after two months, this closeness seemed even stronger.
How does China view India-Russia relations?
Global Times writes that both the leaders are going to discuss all the important issues like defense cooperation, energy security, increasing trade and partnership in new emerging technologies. Along with this, they will also discuss the global and regional situation related to Euro-Asia and Indo-Pacific region. There will also be talk on strengthening cooperation in areas like technology, space, logistics and innovation. According to Russian agency TASS, the two countries will sign 10 government agreements and more than 15 commercial contracts. This visit is taking place at a time when the European Commission is bringing new proposals on the use of Russian funds. In such a situation, this visit of Putin is a direct message to the western countries.
The West will not be able to bend this friendship
Professor Li Haidong of China Foreign Affairs University told Global Times that India-Russia relations are very strategic and capable of withstanding any external pressure. According to him, both the countries want to further enhance their independent foreign policy and strategic capability. Putin’s visit gives a message to the world that neither India nor Russia, no one is alone and Western sanctions will not be able to bend these two countries. According to Professor Lee, this cooperation between India and Russia shows America and Europe that Russia is still a strong power and will not back down from its interests due to Western sanctions. Along with this, India is also not going to bow down to any American pressure in its Russia policy and will continue to take decisions based on its national interests.
Travel is important amid American pressure
Citing the conversation with Sputnik of Sudheendra Kulkarni, former advisor to the Indian PM, the Global Times has written that this visit shows the depth and strength of India-Russia relations and its timing is also very important amidst global pressure. The New York Times wrote that this is a challenging time for India, because America is pressurizing India to stop buying Russian oil and is also threatening sanctions. Meanwhile, Putin has said that Modi is not one to come under anyone’s pressure. He also said that India-Russia defense and trade relations are strong and now more than 90 percent of transactions are taking place in the national currencies of both the countries.
