Kitchen Garden Tips: Thinking of planting new tomato plants in the month of December? Just a simple mixture of soil, cow dung and coco peat can breathe new life into your plants. This desi jugaad not only strengthens the roots but also gives abundant fruits continuously for 3 months. This magical mixture will make your kitchen gardening a super hit.
Rae Bareli: Cultivation of vegetables is considered most profitable in the winter season and among these, tomato is the main crop. The month of December is considered to be the best time to plant tomatoes, because during this time the temperature remains favorable and the plants grow rapidly. If you do not have a farm then there is no need to worry. Tomato cultivation can be done easily at home in pots, balcony, terrace or kitchen garden. All that is needed is the right method and a little care.
Narendra Pratap Singh, senior horticulture inspector of Rae Bareli district, says that if proper care is taken, a pot planted in December gives tomatoes continuously for 2-3 months. Home grown tomatoes are not only fresh and nutritious but are also chemical free, which also provides health benefits. This winter, you too can taste fresh tomatoes by starting tomato cultivation at your home.
Plant tomato plants using this method
First of all, select good quality seed variety of tomato. Good yields of both local and hybrid varieties are obtained in December. Sow the seeds in an onion mesh saucer or any shallow tray and add light soil on top and spray with water. Keep the seeds in a place with open air and light sunlight. In about 12-15 days, when the plants develop 3–4 leaves, they can be transplanted into a bigger pot or grow bag.
Keep these 4 things in mind
According to Narendra Pratap Singh, preparing pot soil is the most important part of tomato cultivation. Mix 50% loamy soil, 30% cow dung or compost and 20% sand or coco peat in the pot. While transplanting plants, take care not to damage the roots. It is important to have a distance of at least 10-12 inches between each plant so that the plants can spread and grow better fruits.
Too much water can be dangerous
It is beneficial for tomato plants to get light sunlight in the morning and shade in the afternoon. At the same time, giving too much water can cause rotting of the roots, hence irrigate only as per need. Giving vermi compost or liquid fertilizer once a week helps the plant to grow faster. It is necessary to use a small wooden stick to support the plant so that the stem does not break due to increase in weight.
Keep an eye on the leaves of plants
Insect attacks are less in winter, yet it is important to keep an eye on the leaves of the plant. If white flies or insects are seen, spray a mixture of neem oil and water. This is a completely safe natural method. About 55-70 days after flowering, fruits begin to form and harvesting can begin.
