Delhi air pollution causes: The pollution level increases in Delhi every winter. The AQI of the capital is still in a very poor condition. Why does this happen every year? Regarding this, Center for Science and Environment and Vivek Chattopadhyay have explained the reasons and solutions.
Delhi AQI causes: Pollution is not showing any signs of reducing in Delhi. Still the AQI here is in very poor category. Not only environment and health experts but also people associated with other institutions have expressed concern about pollution and have even advised to stay away from Delhi for a few days. Due to its effect, the number of patients suffering from almost all diseases is increasing. Whereas the condition of respiratory and lung related patients is becoming serious. However, the biggest question is where is this pollution coming from in Delhi? After all, why does the AQI of Delhi-NCR become so bad with the arrival of winter?
Vivek Chattopadhyay explains that there are many reasons behind the very poor air quality of Delhi. Not only Delhi but many other areas and cities are also equal partners in the pollution of the capital. According to a study, Delhi’s contribution in pollution here is only 30 percent, while NCR’s contribution is also 30 percent and the outside areas have 40 percent contribution.
What causes maximum pollution in Delhi?
This study shows that the most responsible for pollution in Delhi is the biomass and garbage burnt during winter, the emissions from these are the major source of pollution here. In previous studies, the contribution of biomass was found to be up to 25 percent in winter, hence this study raises serious questions.
Vivek says that this study raises serious questions on municipal waste management in cities. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is going on in the country but the condition of the capital Delhi is very bad. It is seen that the contribution of burning of paddy straw is continuously decreasing but despite this the pollution level of Delhi NCR is reaching its peak. Another aspect is the pollution caused by residential cooking, in such a situation the question arises whether the economically weaker sections benefiting from the Ujjwala scheme are not able to refill the cylinders regularly?
These measures will have to be taken to control pollution
Vivek says that the cause of pollution in Delhi will have to be continuously assessed so that its progress and failures can be known. Also, it can be known where the gap is left. Now the time has come to make the municipality fully accountable so that the problem of garbage burning is reduced, SPCB and District Magistrates are made accountable for reducing air pollution from power plants, industries, industrial waste burning, brick kilns and other sources.
