Hyderabad. Situated on the Jubilee Hills, this ancient temple is about 150 years old, Sri Peddamathalli Temple attracts devotees from far and wide due to its beautiful architecture and deep faith. A special tradition here makes it even more special; here coconut water is offered to the goddess and not coconut. There is a mystery behind the name Peddamma Thalli, it is a combination of the Telugu words “Pedda”, meaning elder, and “Amma”, meaning mother, “Peddamma”, meaning mother of mothers.
“Thalli” also represents the form of mother. Thus, Peddamma symbolizes the supreme maternal form of Thalli Devi, she is also worshiped with the names Sri Gouramma and Sri Ammavaru.
Story of quenching thirst and special offering
It is believed that after killing a demon, the goddess quenched her thirst at this very place, that is why even today devotees offer coconut water to her and not the normal coconut. Another unique tradition is seen here, devotees keep the coins at a designated place and ask for their wishes. It is believed that by doing this one gets the blessings of the Goddess and one’s wishes are fulfilled.
how to reach the temple
This temple is located in Jubilee Hills, about 13 kilometers from Secunderabad Railway Station, easily accessible by bus or auto. The nearest metro station is Madhopur, which is just 3 kilometers from here. Darshan timings are from Monday to Saturday from 6 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 8 pm, and on Sunday from 6 am to 8 pm.
