Uttarkashi Bear Attack: The increasing attacks of bears in the hilly areas of Uttarakhand including Uttarkashi have become a matter of concern. According to experts, the change in weather is being said to be a major reason behind this unusual behavior of bears. At the same time, due to continuous bear attacks, an atmosphere of fear has been created among the villagers. Villagers say that bear attacks are happening every day in Bhatwadi area.
Delay in snowfall, impact on bears’ hibernation
December has started, but there has been no snowfall yet in the higher reaches. Generally, bears go into hibernation by November, but this time due to less cold and no snow falling, bears have remained active. This has also increased their aggression. According to the Forest Department, till now bears have attacked 13 people in the district, out of which two people died, while many people are seriously injured.
At the same time, there is an atmosphere of fear among the villagers due to the continuous bear attacks. According to DFO DP Baluni, Uttarkashi Forest Division has prepared a plan to install ‘Annoider System’ (sound-based scaring device), so that bears can be kept away from populated areas. Forest department teams are patrolling till late night. At many places in Bhatwadi area, forest workers are also sending school children to school safely.
The statistics of bear attacks are shocking
So far this year, 5 people have died in the district due to bear attacks. At the same time, 72 people have so far become victims of bear attack. Those who have been admitted to the hospital for treatment in critical condition. Attacks by bears even during the day have scared villagers from going to the forest. People are hesitant even in purchasing fodder, wood, bedding etc. Villagers allege that the forest department’s action is not sufficient and bears are sometimes reaching settlements.
Hope- the weather will improve, the situation will also improve
Experts say that if the weather becomes normal in the coming days and snowfall starts, then the bears will naturally go into hibernation. This is likely to reduce human-wildlife conflict.
