Traffic Rules: You have a vehicle. There are cars and bikes. These are commercial vehicles, but are you aware of all the traffic related rules. There are many rules about which people are not aware, but they have to pay a heavy price for it. For example, if you are smoking cigarette inside the car, you will be challaned. Even if a driver is using the rear-view mirror properly, he will still be fined. Even if an advertisement has been placed on a vehicle without permission and it is detected during investigation, the consequences will have to be faced. There are many such traffic related offenses for which thousands of challans are issued by the traffic police every year. Due to this, people lose lakhs and crores of rupees.
On the roads of the country’s capital Delhi, the traffic police is not only keeping an eye on speeders, but is also taking action on such small violations, which people often ignore. Playing loud music in the car, smoking while sitting in the car, driving without wipers, carrying goods in a private vehicle or turning the vehicle into a moving advertising wall, all these are also being issued heavy challans. Violation of these minor (lesser known) rules can result in a fine ranging from ₹ 500 to ₹ 1,500. According to traffic police data, people generally consider overspeeding, red light jumping, drunk driving or not wearing seat belt as major traffic offenses, but apart from this, many small challans are being issued daily.
How much fine for smoking and loud music?
Smoking in a car is not only considered smoking in a public place, but it also poses a risk of fire. According to the report of ‘Times of India’, the fine is Rs 500 for the first time and Rs 1,500 if caught again. The same penalty will be imposed for playing music at loud volume. This suppresses road noise and increases the risk of accidents. This year, till November 15, 202 challans were issued, whereas in 2024 this number was 149.

Is it illegal to place advertisements without permission?
In 2025, 28,495 people were issued challans for putting advertisements on vehicles without permission, which is several times more than last year’s 5,698 cases. Action is also taken against carrying goods in private vehicles. This year, challans were issued in 4,362 such cases. More than 150 people were fined for misuse of rear-view mirrors. Due to this, action was also taken against those who ran behind buses during rush hour and hung from the footboard. This year 61 people were caught, whereas in 2024 this number was 17.
Is there a fine for watching videos on Jugaad vehicles and mobiles?
Jugaad vehicles commonly seen in markets run without safety standards. There were 788 such challans in 2025, whereas last year there were 135. 72 people fined for watching videos on mobile while driving. 30 people were caught driving without horn. Delhi Traffic Police senior officials say that regular campaigns are run to stop these problems. Emphasis is also laid on making the public aware.
