The owners of Kesar Sugar Mill ensured that people could see and understand the process of crushing sugarcane and making sugar almost 100 years ago. For this purpose, the steam engine and crushing machine in use at that time in the mill premises have been preserved as antique pieces.
Bareilly. Kesar Sugar Mill was established in the year 1933. The steam engine-powered crushing machine used at that time is still preserved as an antique piece in the office premises of the mill. This steam engine was built by the Stock Company, Holland and was used to produce sugar by crushing sugarcane in Bahedi tehsil, Bareilly.
The owners of the mill have preserved it for research and educational purposes so that people and students can learn how sugarcane crushing and sugar manufacturing was done about 100 years ago. This antique piece is still present to see and understand. In the year 1933, the steam engine brought from a Dutch company was an important equipment in the Kesar Sugar Mill located in Baheri Tehsil, Bareilly District. This engine provided the large mechanical power needed to run the mill machines.

The main use of the steam engine was to rotate heavy rollers (cylinders), between which sugarcane was crushed and juice was extracted. Additionally, the mill also used steam to generate electricity, which helped illuminate and operate other parts of the mill. Engines of the 1930s often used compound or triple-expansion techniques to increase steam efficiency.

Sharat Mishra, CEO of Bareilly-based Kesar Sugar Mill, while giving information to Local 18 News, said that he has been working in this company for the last 40 years. He told that the steam engine used in the year 1933 was used for crushing sugar.

This engine is still kept in the mill premises as an antique piece for farmers and students for research and study purposes. This equipment remains an important center of attraction for sugarcane farmers even today. This engine of Holland Stock Company was helpful in crushing 800 TDS tons of sugar 100 years ago. Mohit Yadav, sugarcane farmer from Tehsil Bahedi, District Bareilly, said that he has been associated with Kesar Sugar Mill for many years. His father and grandfather also used to come to this sugar mill to crush their sugarcane. Mohit Yadav said that he always found this steam engine attractive and even today this antique engine standing in the premises of Kesar Sugar Mill attracts his and the farmers’ attention.
