Considering the calm flow of Barak river as a shield, the drug mafia was smuggling heroin worth Rs 12.5 crore from Myanmar into Assam, but could not escape the attention of NCB. Guwahati unit along with CRPF and Assam Police intercepted a suspicious boat near Silchar, in which 6.14 kg heroin hidden in 530 soap boxes was recovered. Two smugglers arrested.
The international drug mafia had thought that they would secretly cross the international border through the river, but luck ran out. When the NCB kept its sight amidst the cold mist of the Barak River, a boat laden with heroin worth Rs 12.5 crore was caught and the entire game of the mafia came crashing down there. Narcotics Control Bureau i.e. NCB has recovered heroin worth Rs 12.5 crore in Assam, breaking the back of an international drug network. This consignment being brought from Myanmar through the Barak River was part of a bigger conspiracy to escape the attention of security agencies. Due to the increasing security in the forests of Manipur, the mafia considered the water route safe, but the sharp edge of intelligence destroyed this confidence.
Based on special intelligence input, Guwahati unit of NCB, CRPF and Assam Police conducted a joint operation. On the night of 1 December, a suspicious boat was seen in the calm waters of the Barak River near Silchar. The agencies stopped it, a search began and then a cache of white death weighing 6.14 kg came to light. It was hidden in 530 soap boxes, with a thick layer of bamboo laid on top to make the boat look like a normal cargo boat. Both the smugglers present in the boat are residents of Cachar district of Assam. All were caught on the spot.
Initial information received during interrogation was that this consignment was sent from the Myanmar border through the river in several stages, so that strict checking in the forests could be avoided. But this time every move of the network failed. According to NCB officials, the value of the seized heroin in the international market is around Rs 12.5 crore. This recovery is not just a consignment, but a big blow exposing the route through which the supply of drugs was increasing in the North-East. Further action has been started by presenting both the accused in the court. The agencies are now keeping an eye on the big leaders of this network, who were trying to make the river waves a way for drugs, but this time the same waves became evidence against them.
