Dhanbad Famous Peda: Krishna Sweets Bhandar, located on NH-2 in Govindpur, Dhanbad, is famous far and wide for its excellent pedas. People passing through the highway, attracted by its sweet fragrance, stop their vehicles and buy Peda to give a sweet break to the journey.
2 rupees peda becomes 10 rupees
Rajesh Prasad, a customer who has been relishing the taste of peda here for many years, says that he has been coming here since the time when one piece of peda was available for just Rs 2. Inflation increased with time and now the price of one peda has become Rs 10. Despite this, there has been no change in taste nor has there been any decline in quality. People say that the sweetness here is still the same as it used to be earlier.
A peda of 24 grams is ready in hours
Uresh Modi, the artisan who prepares Peda, told that here Peda is made completely from pure milk and sugar. No adulterated things are used. The process of making peda is very laborious and time consuming. First of all, about 80 kg milk is thickened by pouring it on top.
Then it is put in a big pan and cooked on low flame for about an hour. After that the prepared mixture is put in the machine and cooked for 30 minutes to an hour. Finally, dough is prepared by adding sugar as per taste and each peda is shaped into 24 grams.
Rs 400 per kg
Every day 25 to 30 kg peda is prepared from about 10 kg sugar and 80 kg milk. The price of one piece has been kept at Rs 10 and the price of one kg has been kept at Rs 400. The peda prepared here has spread its sweetness not only across the country but also abroad. This Peda is sent to many countries including Dubai. Artisan Uresh Modi is originally from Deoghar. Earlier he used to sell milk in the streets of Baba Mandir and work in making peda in shops.
11 year old shop
Times changed and now he has been performing the important responsibility of making peda in Krishna Sweets for the last 11 years. He has constant support from three helpers. The same old taste of sweetness of Deoghar is now being tasted in Govindpur of Dhanbad, where the Peda of Krishna Sweets forces every passerby to stop and taste it once.
