Murgi Palan Business: It is becoming a major means of increasing the income of farmers in Jharkhand. Expert of Animal Husbandry Department of Hazaribagh, Dr. Mukesh Kumar has described Leghorn, Gramapriya, Vanraja, Broiler and Kadaknath as suitable.
Poultry farming is fast becoming a major source of additional income for farmers in Jharkhand. Its role in the rural economy is continuously getting stronger. Due to less investment, less risk and quick profits, farmers are now giving priority to poultry farming along with traditional farming, but choosing the right species often becomes a challenge for the farmers.
On this subject, Dr. Mukesh Kumar, an expert from the Animal Husbandry Training Institute of Hazaribagh, said that some species give the best results for egg production in the climate of Jharkhand. Among these, Leghorn is considered the most reliable. It lays 260 to 300 eggs in a year and produces well even with less fodder.
He told that apart from this, Gramapriya is also becoming increasingly popular, which lays about 200 to 230 eggs annually and there is always a good demand for eggs with local taste in the market.

He said that Vanraja variety is suitable for both eggs and meat in rural areas. It lays 160-180 eggs per year and due to the large size of its eggs, it fetches good prices to the farmers. It easily adapts to the climate of Jharkhand and is less affected by diseases.
Dr. Mukesh Kumar further explains that when it comes to meat production, Krishna Jayanti and broiler species gain more weight in less time, due to which they are most preferred by commercial farmers. Broilers become ready for the market in just 40-45 days, while Krishna Jayanti attains a weight of up to two kg in 60-70 days. Due to this, farmers get continuous and fast income.
He also told that farmers targeting premium market can earn big money by following Kadaknath. Kadaknath meat is considered full of medicinal properties and its price in the market is two to three times more than that of normal chicken. Although its growth is slow, the profits are relatively high.
Dr. Mukesh Kumar further explains that if the farmers of Jharkhand want balanced production of both eggs and meat, then Vanraja and Gramapriya are the most suitable options. These species are known for less disease, low cost and high production. At the same time, broiler is still the best option for farmers who want fast income.
He has advised the farmers that before starting poultry farming, it is very important to understand the climate of their area, availability of food and market demand. Choosing the right variety not only increases profits but also reduces risks.
