Kishanganj/Guwahati. The world recognizes Siliguri Corridor on the map of India not just by its name but by its importance. This land is such a part that if someone stops it, someone disturbs it or someone tries to capture it, then all the seven states of North-East of India can be in danger. In fact, India has strengthened the security arrangements in Siliguri Corridor (Chicken Neck), a strategically important area of the North-East and its associated border states. This move has come at a time when recent activities by neighboring countries Bangladesh, Pakistan and China have drawn the attention of India’s security agencies. Vigilance increased after political instability in Bangladesh

After the recent political changes and unstable environment in Bangladesh, India has increased security in the border areas. According to intelligence inputs, there has been an increase in illegal movement, smuggling and suspicious activities in recent weeks, especially along the borders of Meghalaya, West Bengal and Tripura. For this reason, curfew has been implemented in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya from 8 pm to 6 am. According to officials, this decision has been taken with the aim of strengthening security and border surveillance.

Question on presence of Pakistani officials near the border

According to intelligence reports, some senior military officers of Pakistan have recently visited Rangpur area of Bangladesh which is not very far from the Siliguri Corridor. Security agencies have not ruled out considering it as a normal visit, but keeping in mind its timing and location, it is being considered as a ‘monitorable activity’.

India also keeps an eye on China’s activities in Doklam

Since the 2017 Doklam dispute, China has been continuously strengthening infrastructure construction and military logistics in that area. Sources say that the latest satellite images have shown an increase in road construction and military deployment. Due to Doklam’s geographical location being close to the Siliguri Corridor, India considers it sensitive and does not want to relax its vigilance.

India’s great preparation, multi-layer security and determination

India has decided not to take any risk and multi-layered security has been implemented in Siliguri. Security has been strengthened with ground surveillance, air defense (S-400), Rafale fighter jets, BrahMos missiles, drones and satellite monitoring. New garrisons are deployed in Bishnupur, Kishanganj and Chopra. Trishakti Corps (based in Siliguri) has decided to take immediate action in the joint meeting of Intelligence-Army. On the other hand, during Meghalaya curfew, the army has the right to open fire if anyone crosses the border.

Air Force and Army activity increased

Sources have confirmed that in recent weeks the Indian Air Force has increased high-intensity training and air patrolling at several airbases in the Northeast. Fighter air patrolling, drone surveillance and multi-tier ground security have been activated around the Siliguri corridor. According to military officials, this is a routine security procedure, but in view of the current geopolitical circumstances, it has been implemented as ‘Strengthened Security Protocol’.

Recently America had described the North-Eastern region as important for the strategic stability of Asia. India has indicated that foreign strategic influence or presence in the North-Eastern region would be unacceptable. This stand is also being seen in the context of security preparations in Meghalaya and Siliguri corridor. No-fly zones and exercises have increased in the Northeast and our military officials clearly say that the Siliguri corridor is no longer our weakness but our strong defense line.

India is strong in the field without risk

According to security officials, the current measures are not in response to any threat but are part of a ‘precautionary and pre-emptive security strategy’. The Army says that Siliguri Corridor is a strategic link of India. Any external activity or instability cannot be ignored. Security has been strengthened, but the situation is under control. Now one line is clearly heard in the language of the army and security agencies – Chicken Neck is no longer India’s weakness, but the place from where India will show its strength.
