Patna. The session of Bihar Assembly is starting tomorrow from 1st December. Just two days before this, on 29 November, the Grand Alliance meeting was held in Patna. What happened in the meeting seemed to tell the story of the new picture emerging in the politics of Bihar. Actually, in the meeting, Tejashwi Yadav was elected the leader of the Grand Alliance in the Assembly. All the RJD MLAs were there, the Left also attended, but not a single Congress MLA attended. Only one MLC Sameer Kumar Singh came, that too just for show. Congress said – all our MLAs are holding their own separate meetings in Delhi. RJD people are saying – no problem, Tejashwi is the leader. But, the inside news received from sources is that Congress has clearly refused.
Congress’s past record and direction of change
Congress kept going down in Bihar year after year
In fact, Congress has once been a strong political force in Bihar, but the party’s support base has been continuously decreasing in the last two decades. In the 2005 October elections, Congress got 9 seats and the vote share was 6.09%. After that Congress did not dare. Yes, Congress contested alone in the 2010 assembly elections. In that election, Congress had got only 4 seats and its vote share was about 8.37%. Obviously this demonstration was a big blow for the Congress. After this, the party contested the elections in 2015 by forming RJD-JDU alliance and in 2020 by forming Grand Alliance. In 2015, Congress’s performance was better and it got 27 seats and vote share of 6.7%. That election had given relief to Congress, but it became clear that the success was due to the alliance with RJD-JDU. After this, in the year 2020, Congress fielded candidates on 70 seats and could win only 19 seats. The vote percentage was around 9.5%. Obviously this demonstration was once again going to raise questions on the party’s position.
Congress’s performance in the last few years
- 2005 (October)- Congress contested the elections alone; Won 9 seats, vote-share was 6.09%.
- 2010- Congress participated alone; Won 4 seats, vote share was 8.37%.
- 2015- Congress contested the elections with the Grand Alliance (RJD–JDU and others); won 27 seats, vote-share was 6.7%.
- 2020- Congress fights with RJD-centric grand alliance; Won 19 seats, vote share was 9.5%.
- 2025- Despite fighting with the Grand Alliance, Congress’s performance remained weak; Won only 6 seats, vote share was 8.71%.
Now why does Congress want to separate?
What is the challenge before Congress?
However, in the eyes of political experts, if Congress decides to go alone then it will face big challenges. Firstly, to get back the lost vote bank, secondly, to strengthen the organization at the district and block level, thirdly, to establish youth leadership and a new political line. Above all, learning from past mistakes. Congress leaders are saying that the party is exploring options, but the decision will not be taken in haste. But now it is clearly visible that its role in the alliance is no longer the same as before. If Congress wants to bring back its identity then it will have to take a strict and independent political line.
