Shashank Shekhar/Jehanabad: The history of Indian currency is very old. Its story is long and interesting. Starting from coins like Kauri, Damri, Dhela, this journey has reached the rupee. These old coins not only tell the history and culture of India’s economy, but also show how our way of transactions has changed with time. However, this story is very old. The elders give information that it was a time even before their time, when cowries were in use as money in India. These cowries were small shells emerging from the sea, which were prevalent especially in the states of South India. Because all these cities were situated on the sea shore. Earlier, goods were bought with these pennies. The value of cowries depended on availability and demand. The fewer there were, the more valuable they were considered.
In a similar manner, money spread from broken shells to shells and then gradually reached Damri. After this the journey reached Aana and then Paisa. After this the rupee became today’s part. On this subject, the team of Local 18 talked to Kunti Devi, an 85 year old woman resident of Kako, Jehanabad. The 85 year old grandmother told the story of the change in money and medium of transactions.
Reminiscing about her childhood, she says that it is about the time of independence, she is conscious of that time. His parents were farmers and had to face a lot of difficulties at that time. There was difficulty in commuting. The kind of food that is available today was not available in those people’s childhood. Sometimes he felt like eating biscuits, so his guardian would give him an anna or two. Their work was done only in that.
She further says that as age increased and the world became modern, a lot of changes were seen in money. There was a change in money due to arrival. From 1 paisa, 2 paisa, different types of travel reached 25 paisa and 50 paisa. Elderly woman Kunti Devi told that her parents used to say a saying that “There is not even a single penny in our pocket”, about this she told that on asking her parents the meaning of this, they came to know that when there is not even a single penny in the pocket, it means there is not even a single penny in the pocket. In this way it was later understood that the penny was the smallest currency. After which there is nothing.
