Indians Banned Places: Contrary to popular belief, India is a multicultural country, which welcomes everyone. But, it may shock and surprise many people to know that some places in India do not allow entry to Indian citizens.
India has an image as a country that welcomes everyone equally. But, this notion is questioned by a move in which entry of Indians has been banned at 6 places in India. There is no doubt that India is a multicultural country that welcomes everyone. Many people will be surprised to know that some places in India are not open even to Indian citizens. For reasons such as environmental protection, national security, foreign diplomatic agreements or specific trade policies, entry of Indians is banned at certain places in the country.
Although the Indian Constitution grants citizens the right to travel and reside anywhere in the country, in practice some “restricted areas” exist. Some of these have been implemented for security reasons and some are due to controversial rules of private companies. In this episode, let us now take a look at 6 major places in India, where Indians are prohibited from visiting or where there are strict restrictions on them.
1. Red Lollipop Inn- Chennai: Red Lollipop Inn hotel located in Chennai city of Tamil Nadu is embroiled in controversy due to its “No entry for Indians” policy. 2. Goa’s ‘only for foreigners’ beaches: Goa is considered a tourist paradise, but some of the beaches here give priority to foreign tourists. There have been allegations of restrictions on the entry of Indians, especially in areas like Arambol. It is said that this system has been created with the aim of protecting foreign tourists wearing bikinis and swimsuits from unwanted glances.
3. Free Kasol Cafe- Kasol, Himachal Pradesh: This cafe located in Kasol, Himachal Pradesh has been in the news for allegedly not allowing entry to Indians. Incidents of people of Indian origin being refused for asking for menu went viral on social media. On the contrary, this café is said to be open only to Israeli tourists.
4. Broad Lands Hotel- This British-style hotel located in Chennai is known for giving special preference to foreigners. Although there is no official ban on Indians, it is said that most of the customers are foreigners. Apart from this, there are also criticisms regarding identity cards and entry rules for Indians.
5. Sakura Ryokan Restaurant- Ahmedabad: This Japanese restaurant located in Ahmedabad has a board saying “Indians not allowed” at the entrance. 6. Russian Colony- Kudankulam: The Russian colony located in Kudankulam, Tamil Nadu is one of the most important places restricted to Indians. The area was built by the Russians in the 1800s and was later declared a protected area for strategic reasons. Although it is now considered a tourist destination, Indian citizens cannot enter it without special permission from the Russian Embassy.
These places question the image of India in which it is seen as a country that welcomes everyone equally. These internal restrictions imposed in the name of security, culture and trade have sparked a fresh debate on equality and tolerance. The inability of Indians to visit some places in their own country raises many social and political questions.
