A 5 month old child underwent successful surgery due to battery swallowing in Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. This was not easy at all. Doctors say that children should be kept away from small electronic devices or batteries as these can be fatal if not treated on time.
There is no guarantee as to what items children should put in their mouth while playing. Therefore, small sized items should not be left around a small child. Otherwise, this small mistake can prove fatal for your child. Recently, a similar case of negligence of parents has come to light in Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.
A 5-month-old child had put a button battery in his mouth while playing. The parents also came to know about this when the child kept coughing for a week. After which he was taken to the hospital where the doctor advised to get an X-ray done in time.
Battery stuck in neck seen in X-ray
A few days ago, while playing, the child accidentally swallowed a button cell (small battery). The child kept coughing continuously due to which his parents took him to a private hospital. After X-ray was done there, it was found that a round object was stuck in the child’s food pipe.
ulcer in throat
Doctors at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital have succeeded in removing a battery from the esophagus of a five-month-old baby. Investigation found that the chemical released from the battery had also caused ulcers in the upper part of the child’s food pipe.
Surgery was not easy
The team of ENT and Pediatric Surgery department of the hospital immediately performed the endoscopy procedure. Doctors said that if the battery was not removed on time, the chemical could have caused a hole in the food pipe and the child’s condition would have become critical. Dr. Rakesh Joshi, Medical Superintendent and Head of the Child Surgery Department said that this surgery was not easy at all.
Child recovered after 15 days
After the surgery, the child was given medicines so that the ulcer could heal. A follow-up endoscopy was done after 15 days, which showed complete healing of the child’s esophagus.
Parents remembered after seeing the report
After seeing the X-ray report, the parents remembered that their child was playing with a button battery a few days ago. However, if checked on time, the child is completely out of danger. But this case is an example of how parental negligence can put a child’s life in danger.
