Nainital News: The sudden increase in demand for gun licenses in Nainital has forced even the administration to think. For the last few months, a large number of people in the district have been demanding permission to keep weapons, considering themselves unsafe, which clearly shows the increasing concern of the people regarding security.
Nainital: The increasing demand for gun licenses in Nainital, Uttarakhand has surprised even the administration. In the last few months, 480 people of the district have written to the administration that they are facing ‘threat to their lives’ and that is why they want a weapon license. Not only this, on an average more than 30 new applications are being submitted every month in the district, which is much more than the normal situation.
According to Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Vivek Rai, a large number of people are demanding permission to possess weapons, considering themselves unsafe. Many applicants are making rounds of administrative offices, preparing documents and trying to prove that there is a real threat to their life and property. The administration says that the increase in such applications also reflects a social psychology, where people seem to be more cautious or worried about security.
License is issued after three levels of investigation
Nainital ADM Vivek Rai said that the licensing process has now become more stringent than before. Three levels of investigation are mandatory before granting license to any applicant. First of all it is necessary to have a police report. Second field verification is necessary and character test is also necessary. He said that only that person can obtain a weapon license whose threat is found to be credible and proven in documents. The administration clearly says that no license will be issued without necessity.
People said that our lives are in danger
Most of the applicants have cited old disputes, threats, land issues and occupational risks as the reasons for the need for weapons. However, the administration is thoroughly investigating all these claims so that no person can obtain weapons by giving wrong information. In a district like Nainital which is considered peaceful and safe, so many weapon applications are raising many questions. Is the threat of crime increasing? Or is the feeling of psychological insecurity deepening among people? The administration says that the security arrangements are normal, but increasing social disputes and personal conflicts are increasing the atmosphere of fear among the people. In the coming days, the administration is preparing to increase awareness on this issue and also tighten surveillance.
