Inhuman treatment happening in jails, there is no water
Kyiv. The longer the Russia-Ukraine war is dragging on, the more gruesome stories are coming out. Alina Kapatsyna’s life has also been changed by the war, as her mother is in the custody of the Russian army. Alina Kapatsyna often dreams of receiving a phone call from her mother, telling her that she is coming home. In April, 45-year-old Vita Hanik was taken away from her home by men in military uniform in eastern Ukraine who did not return. Her family later learned that Hainik, who had been suffering from long-term seizures due to a brain cyst, was being detained in the Russian-occupied part of the Donetsk region.
Kapatsyna told The Associated Press it was unclear why her mother was detained. He said that the reason for detaining a peace-loving and sick woman is not understood. Like Hanik, many ordinary Ukrainians have been captured by Russian forces. Many of these people have been made prisoners of war, while they had no participation in the war. There are many people whose legal status is in limbo, because they have neither been made prisoners of war, nor have they been charged with any other charges.
Hainik was captured by Russian forces from the village of Volodimirivka.
When Russian forces caught Hainik from the village of Volodimirivka, she was wearing only a sweatsuit and slippers. This village is still under the occupation of Russian forces. Kapatsyna said her family initially thought she would be coming home soon, as the Russian military released people after holding them for two or three days. He said that the mother’s release was expected also because she had no military affiliation whatsoever. He said that when the mother did not return, her search was started. Various Russian authorities and bodies in the Donetsk region said they did not apprehend him.
Information about Hanik being in jail was received after receiving the letter.
Kapatsyna said there was finally some clarity and a letter from the prosecutor’s office set up by Moscow in the Donetsk region said Hainik was in jail in another Russian-controlled town of Olenivka. Prison staff said that Hanik is a ‘sniper’. His family called this allegation baseless. Medical records seen by the AP confirm that Hanick suffers from seizures.

Anna Vorosheva also spent 100 days in the same prison where Hainik is lodged. He recalled the humiliating, inhumane conditions of the prison where there was no drinking water, where no one could sleep, and the screams of new inmates being beaten up every day. There are many Ukrainian people who have been imprisoned in Russian prisons for no reason and no one knows whether they will come back or not.
